Semen and ejaculation
Semen is what comes out through the urethra in the penis when you ejaculate, often in conjunction with orgasm. Semen is a mixture of different fluids and only a small part of the spermatic fluid or semen actually consists of sperm.
Amount
One ejaculation normally consists of about 3-5 ml of fluid (approx. 1 teaspoon). Semen is formed continually and never runs out, no matter how many ejaculations you have. If you have had several ejaculations in a short period of time, the volume can decrease temporarily.
Appearance
The ejaculate may be transparent, white, grey or yellowish. If the ejaculation is red, pink or reddish-brown, that could be because it contains blood. It is not unusual to have blood in one's ejaculate from time to time and this is nothing to worry about. Usually it is because a small blood vessel has burst. If there is blood in your ejaculate on repeated occasions, you should go for a medical examination so as to rule out illness.
Semen can by thin and watery, sticky, or contain small lumps. Its consistency can vary.
Taste and smell
The taste and smell of semen can be affected by what you eat or drink. The smell of the ejaculate is often described as being like grass or seaweed. It tastes salty and slightly metallic.
